BetsRank Verdict

Our read of the game, based on the data the studio publishes

Blood & Shadow pulls off something few progression machines manage: it makes the climb itself interesting. Every Ritual Bar tier produces a visible effect — low symbols vanishing, medium symbols promoted — instead of just nudging a counter towards a distant reward. You watch the grid improve, and it works. The flip side is brutal. Cursed Spins, which hold all the game's potential, land once in 10,030 spins. Candle Spins arrive once in 13 and pay very little. The result is a game that constantly feels like it is progressing without ever arriving, which is precisely the intended effect but becomes exhausting over a long session. The switch to 5x5 with xSplit justifies the wait. It is a genuine change of state, not just a batch of free spins: new grid, new symbol set, new mechanic. Still, 6,666x at 1 in 97 million is a very hard ceiling for a multiplier that looks reachable on paper. Score: 8.1 out of 10. One of the studio's best-written progressions, undermined by a top-tier bonus frequency that is close to theoretical without buying in.

Strengths

+The Ritual Bar produces visible effects at every tier, not just a counter
+The shift to 5x5 with 3,125 ways is a genuine change of game
+Candle Spins offer regular relief, roughly once every 13 spins
+Baphomet Rite at 66x is the best-calibrated buy, with the highest RTP
+Sticky Wilds locked at the bottom of the reels create readable situations

To consider

−Cursed Spins only land once in 10,030 spins without a purchase
−6,666x at 1 in 97 million odds is severe for a ceiling of that size
−Frequent Candle Spins pay little and sustain a false sense of progress
−An 87.01% RTP tier circulates at some operators
−The 500x Cursed Spins buy puts a steep barrier in front of the real content

Blood & Shadow in detail

Released on 7 March 2023, Blood & Shadow is built around one idea pushed all the way: a ritual meter that purges the grid. The game starts on 4-4-4-4-4, five reels of four cells, 1,024 ways, with a conventional cascade engine. Every win removes the symbols involved, and every removed symbol feeds the Ritual Bar. The accounting is precise: a medium symbol is worth 1 point, a high symbol 2, a scatter 10. The tiers ask for 20, 30, 40, 60 and finally 80 points. Each level cleared permanently strips low-paying symbols from the reels and promotes medium symbols into high ones. The grid cleans itself up as the round goes on, which is exactly what a player wants to watch happen. Candle Spins accompany that climb: two free spins are awarded at each level reached up to the third. Sticky Wilds play a central role here — they appear on reels 2 to 5, drop to the bottom of their reel during Candle Spins and stay stuck there until they contribute to a win. Reaching level 5 triggers Cursed Spins, and the game changes nature. The grid expands to 5x5, taking the total to 3,125 ways, the Ritual Bar disappears, only high symbols remain and xSplit® enters the picture: it cuts through rows or entire reels, doubling the symbols it passes through. Each additional scatter adds a spin. The numbers are harsh. Extreme volatility rated 10 out of 10, a 27.18% hit rate, Candle Spins roughly once in 13 spins but Cursed Spins only once in 10,030, and a 6,666x maximum win listed at 1 chance in 97 million. The headline RTP is 96.13%, with operator tiers at 94.03%, 92.04% and 87.01%.

Blood & Shadow mechanics

▸Five-level Ritual Bar: 1 point per medium symbol, 2 per high symbol, 10 per scatter. The tiers demand 20, 30, 40, 60 then 80 points, and each one strips low-paying symbols from the grid.
▸Cascades: every win removes the symbols involved and lets the rest drop. This is the only engine feeding the Ritual Bar, so the whole game hangs on how long your chains run.
▸Candle Spins: two free spins awarded at each level reached up to the third. They land roughly once every 13 spins, making them the game's regular breathing space.
▸Sticky Wilds: present on reels 2 to 5. During Candle Spins they slide to the bottom of their reel and stay stuck there until they take part in a winning combination.
▸Cursed Spins: reaching level 5 expands the grid to 5x5, that is 3,125 ways, removes the Ritual Bar and leaves only high-paying symbols. Each scatter there adds one extra spin.
▸xSplit® in Cursed Spins: it cuts through rows or entire reels and doubles the symbols it passes through. It is the only trademarked studio mechanic in this game, and it appears nowhere else in it.

❓Blood & Shadow FAQ

What is the maximum win in Blood & Shadow?▾

6,666 times the stake, a figure chosen to match the theme.

The stated probability is roughly 1 in 97 million spins, which makes it one of the hardest ceilings to reach in the Nolimit City catalogue despite a multiplier that looks modest on paper.

How does the Ritual Bar work?▾

Every symbol removed by a cascade adds points: 1 for a medium symbol, 2 for a high one, 10 for a scatter.

The five tiers require 20, 30, 40, 60 then 80 points. Clearing a tier removes low-paying symbols and promotes medium symbols into high ones.

What separates Candle Spins from Cursed Spins?▾

Candle Spins are small progression rewards: two free spins per level reached up to the third, roughly once every 13 spins.

Cursed Spins only arrive at level 5, about once in 10,030 spins, and completely transform the game into a 5x5 grid with 3,125 ways.

What is the Baphomet Rite?▾

A 66x stake purchase that places you directly at level 3 of the Ritual Bar and awards 6 Candle Spins, replacing three low or medium symbols with high ones.

It is the best-calibrated option on the menu, with a stated RTP of 96. 18%, the highest in the game.

How much do the bonus buys cost?▾

Four options: Lucky Draw levels 1 to 5 at 55x the stake, Baphomet Rite at 66x, Lucky Draw levels 3 to 5 at 166x and Cursed Spins at 500x for ten spins.

The associated RTP figures range from 96. 01% to 96. 18% depending on which one you take.
